Success in Gymnatics Championships

OUR LADY’S GRAMMAR SCHOOL, NEWRY WERE CROWNED U19 BRITISH CHAMPIONS FOR AN AMAZING FIFTH YEAR IN A ROW.

The Senior Team

The Newry girls’ travelled to Stoke-on-Trent on Saturday 2nd May for the Schools Sports Acrobatics Championships.  They had fifteen students in all comprising of an U13 pair, an U13 team and an U19 team.

The senior team made up of Captain Roisin Bradley, Rebecca Hannaway, Cúshla Connor, Cara Cully, Aoife Fearon, Niamh-Ellen Wallace and Tara O’Hare.  They picked up their fifth British Title at that level and the achievement was made all the more remarkable by the fact the St David’s of London, contained no less than five World Champions in their squad and Brisham Green from South-West England had two World Champions in their ranks.  This was the highest team score ever recorded at this level.

The teams travelled with their school principal Ms Geraldine Pettigrew and Vice Principal Mrs Teresa McAllister.  Their coach Roxanne Connor and Head of PE, Imelda McAteer were both delighted with the outcome and commended the girls on their outstanding achievement.

This is an incredible achievement for the girls as they were up against some very stiff competition from the other regions.  Some of the schools like St David’s are specialist schools in gymnastics and would be able to train every day as a team, which would greatly benefit their performance.  The Newry girls’ however rose to the occasion and performed “out of their skin”.

Kaitlinn Connor and Maeve Finnegan

The U13 team won silver and their team consisted of Captain Rebecca Cable, Kaitlinn Connor, Maeve Finnegan, Mary-Rose Finnegan, Aisling Craven, Paula Mathers, Deribhile Craven and  Eimear Fearon and the U 13 pair, Kaitlinn Connor and Maeve Finnegan received a very respectable Bronze.  The Pair were the youngest in the competition and will therefore be able to perform in the competition again next year.
