Schools from Northern Ireland and Ireland have been using their video and editing skills over the past few weeks preparing their entries for the Local To Global video competition organised and sponsored by the British Council and the European Commission. The EU is currently considering what more needs to be done to tackle global warming and boost renewable energy use. The competition sought to stimulate discussion and debate in schools about climate change and how we can get involved locally and make an impact globally.

Schools from across Ireland and Northern Ireland were invited to submit a 2-3 minute video which presented innovative ways of reducing their carbon footprint by taking action in schools and/or local communities. The purpose of the short video was to encourage other people from the wider school/community to get involved in tackling climate change by acting locally.

The competition was independently judged by the Environmental Education Forum, and Our Lady’s Grammar School was named as runner-up for Northern Ireland. The winning team was presented with a range of environmental prizes.

Jonathan Stewart, British Council Northern Ireland said “Climate change is a core strand of the British Council’s work and we can see from the entries how this competition has stimulated discussion in schools on this topic. Congratulations to Our Lady’s Grammar School for winning the runner-up prize, whose creative entry involved the wider school and local community demonstrating how we all have a responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint.”

Eddie McVeigh, Head of the European Commission Office in Northern Ireland said “I would like to congratulate Our Lady’s Grammar School on being the runner-up in this competition which challenged young people across Ireland to reflect on what can be done locally to cut global warming.”
