Biology Field Trips

The lower sixth A.S. Biology Students went to Killowen Outdoor Education Centre on 9th & 10th of March in order to carry Biology Field Studies. The main study involved investigation of  the zonation of a rocky shore. Students gained experience in ecological sampling techniques – belt transects and the use of quadrants.

A pond ecosystem was also observed and students had the opportunity to practise the “mark - release – recapture” method on Caddis Case Fly larvae.  Another local school has reported back that they have subsequently found some of the marked larvae – still with their pieces of orange wool attached!!!

The weather was dreadful when we arrived there but it eventually brightened up and made the whole experience more enjoyable.  We had a great time and learnt a great deal from the whole experience as we identified, quantified and discussed the diversity of the species found there. The pictures show the great educational fieldtrip we had.
